The vessels were built in the 1970s and 1980s, and extending their life cycle is no longer cost-effective.

  14. 22.4.2026 | The Finnish Defence Forces participated in cyber defence exercise Locked Shields 26 in a joint team with the National Defence Training Association NDTA, Estonia and the United States. Constantly changing cyber threats do not know national borders, so training together and developing the cyber capability is increasingly important.

  16. 24.2.2026 | Hull assembly of the second Pohjanmaa-class multi-role corvette being built for the Finnish Navy was completed at the turn of the year at the Rauma shipyard. The vessel has received its grey protective coating, and part of the protective covering has been removed.

  17. 18.12.2025 | The Finnish Defence Forces will acquire additional unmanned aerial systems (UAS) suitable for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as target acquisition, including associated equipment and spare parts. Deliveries of the systems will begin at the start of next year.

  18. 20.2.2026 | The Finnish Defence Forces will participate this spring’s key arctic exercise series during 9.–20.3.2026. The Norwegian-led Cold Response 26 -exercise will convene up to c. 7,500 soldiers in Finland and c. 25,000 soldiers in Norway from altogether 14 nations. In Finland, the exercise activity will focus on the Finnish Defence Forces’ exercise area at Rovajärvi but forces will be on the move across northern Finland.

  19. 14.1.2026 | The Squadron 2020 programme is progressing as planned. Steel cutting for the fourth Pohjanmaa-class multi-role corvette has commenced, and the keel of the third vessel has been laid in accordance with naval tradition at the Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) shipyard. With these milestones, construction of all vessels included in the programme is now underway.

  20. 12.12.2025 | On 12 December 2025, Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen authorised the Defence Forces Logistics Command to procure AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) from the United States. The missiles are compatible with the F-35A multirole fighters.
