In the years 2022–2024, the Finnish Defence Forces will upgrade and supplement the simulator system in training use (KASI) as part of a project for simulated combat environment (SITY). The product procurements will enable continuing the use of the existing live simulators to support troop training until the end of 2032.

Making training increasingly effective in the field, live simulators are part of a training simulator system that marks the effects of firearms, artillery, mines, and other battlefield elements by means of laser impulses and radio commands that trigger reactions in the indicators mounted on target vests and vehicles.

In conjunction with the procurements, the simulator FDC facility and its equipment in the Pori Brigade as well as of other simulators on the necessary scale will be upgraded in altogether eight brigade-level units. The objective of this supplementing also involves expanding opportunities in the Army for training fighting in built-up areas.

The purchase will provide support to the increasing training of the reserve, and expand training opportunities especially in exercising combat in built-up areas.

– We will procure more simulators to meet the Finnish Defence Forces’ training needs. In that way, we can improve our troops’ competence and capability both across Finland and in multinational collaboration with our partners. The purchase will provide support to the increasing training of the reserve, and expand training opportunities especially in exercising combat in built-up areas, Colonel Kari Pietiläinen, ACOS TRNG DEFCOM says.

The total value of the procurement, exclusive of VAT, will be EUR 15,57 million, relating to the development programme for the Finnish Defence Forces’ force production (PVJOTU). The simulators will be supplied by the Swedish manufacturer Saab AB, Training & Simulation. In Finland, the servicing and repair facility for the system employs 5–6 personnel (5-6 person-years) tasked with servicing and repairs as well as with military exercise support services.
